AGUNG - VOLCANO TREKKING

Our beloved area of Amed lays practically at Gunung Agung’s feet. This volcano is the highest point on Bali, towering over 3000 meters above sea level.

Agung has a huge spiritual significance to the Balinese people and is home to the mother temple of Besakih, located high on the slopes of Agung. The Balinese believe that Mount Agung is a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe. One legend holds that the mountain is a fragment of Meru brought to Bali by the first Hindus.

It completely dominates the surrounding area, even influencing the climate. The clouds come from the West and Agung takes their water so that the west is lush and green while the east – our area – remains essentially dry and barren.

Gunung Agung last erupted in 1963 and is still active, with a large and very deep crater which very occasionally belches smoke and ash. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical, despite the existence of the large crater.

From the peak of the mountain, it is possible to see the tip of Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok, although both mountains are frequently covered in clouds.

Who is this trek for?
Climbing Mount Agung is probably one of the most unforgettable experiences you can possibly have in Bali, yet it’s not for those who are looking for an easy “holiday” climb. Trekking to the top of Agung requires a much higher level of fitness and mental discipline than the trek to Batur for example. You do not need to be one of the greatest mountain climbers in the world, but complete amateurs or those who already get out of breath climbing the stairs up to their bungalow should think twice before going on this adventure trek.

The trek in details
The trek will start from Puru Pasar Agung Temple sitting at an altitude of 1.700 meters. The trail will bring you up to the peak, at about 3,140 meters. You will need between 4-5 hours to reach the summit. You will walk through the pitch-dark, silent jungle during the entire ascent. You will walk up in the dark silence of the jungle under a canopy of stars. After a strenuous walk through the sleepless night, you will reach the top around 6am, just in time for the mesmerizing sunrise.

  • A head-lamp so you have your hands free during the trek
  • A walking stick (you can ask your guide to make you one before you start)
  • Very comfortable shoes with a grip
  • Bring some light gloves to protect your hands for when you hold on to something
  • Clothing – You will go through different temperature changes and we suggest you wear clothes you can wear in layers and which are not too heavy. If you get some sweat absorbent clothes that would be even better, because when you start climbing you will sweat, but as soon as you sit down in the night for a break, it will be cooler and wearing sweaty t-shirts make it difficult to get warm again
  • Food – Yes, you will be on your feet for many hours, but don’t bring too much food; a heavy backpack will just weigh you down. Some nuts, dry fruit, energy bars are a good option
  • Drinks: water, some isotonic drinks and something hot (especially when it is getting colder the higher you climb) are more important.
  • Sunscreen – you will need it for the descent when the sun can be strong

Join us to climb Batur Bali to enjoy an unforgettable sunrise from the top of an this active volcano. Spectacular scenery and the vibration of the sacred earth filling your mind and soul.

Who is this trek for?
You might wish to put this trek on your Bali travel itinerary if

  • You like outdoor activities
  • Have an average level of fitness without wanting to go to your physical limits
  • You are an avid poster on Instagram, a hobby or professional nature photographer Or you are simply curious to explore new adventures and the natural beauty Bali has to offer

The trek in details
Your day will start early, very early as you’ll be picked-up from The Griya around 1.30am. It takes about 2 hours to get to the starting point. Batur being very popular, you will not be alone, so do not expect a “I am the King of the world” moment once you get to the summit.

On a beautiful clear night, you will see Lake Batur and admire the starlit sky. Just breathing in the fresh air, enjoying a beautiful walk, listening to silent whispers of the jungle alone will make the trip worthwhile. Walking on a trail especially in the dark requires caution though and your full attention. Also, it’s important to stay hydrated but if you don’t want to carry heavy drinks you can buy them on the way up, because there are catering guys carrying backpacks with drinks up the mountain, you get to the second part of the climb it gets a bit steeper, so you’ll just walk more slowly, paying attention to where you put your feet. The average fit person will reach a small platform, which is not yet the highest point, in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Many people wait here for the sunrise, but we recommend to keep going to the very top which will take another 30 minutes or so, along a steep sandy trail. It’s much less crowded up there.

The Mount Batur sunrise trek is not a “secret” trek for the people in the know, it is very popular among nature loving tourists and of course the Balinese were able to make a business out of it. Not surprisingly, you will find a warung at the top where you can get hot drinks as well as yummy fried bananas while waiting for the sunrise.

Sitting there in the dark, with very low temperatures, the hot drinks will be more than appreciated. Seriously, do not underestimate the cold at that time of the day on the top of the mountain so wrap up. With a hot drink in your hand, glazing at the horizon, you won’t be disappointed when the sunrise appears, it is absolutely breathtaking! On a clear day, you can see Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island.

You’ll admire the panoramic view over Lake Batur and Gunung Abang. Photography passionates will have the time of their life on the top of Mount Batur. Even the amateur smartphone photographer will be in awe of the photos they take.

With all those beautiful images in our mind and heart, you’ll make your way back down via a narrow, scenic trail, which will lead you around the crater. And again, you won’t be able to get our cameras out fast enough when you’ll see the warm lava stream coming out from the walls of the volcano.

The descent might take you a bit longer, like over 3 hours, because you’ll walk around the crater first. Watch your step, stones and sand can make the way down a bit slippery.

The climb is physically not too challenging and we think anybody with a relatively good fitness condition can make it. The whole trip typically takes between 5 and 6 hours (2 or 3 hours ascent, 3 to descend).
